Even as the Delta variant of COVID-19 continues to surge across the state of Louisiana, a new threat has been identified as doctors have now reported the Lambda variant has been diagnosed in patients in the Pelican State, according to WBRZ-TV.

The Lambda variant’s first U.S. detection was in Houston, Tex., and it seems to have found its way across the state border into Louisiana.

"I do know that with the proximity with Texas, there have been a few cases detected in North Louisiana with the Lamda variant.  But we don't know whether this is going to be a more aggressive or less aggressive virus," Ochsner Medical Director Dr. Aldo Russo told WBRZ. "We are monitoring this very closely. Our teams are sequencing the different variants.”

Currently there’s no information as to how effective the Moderna, Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccines might be against this new strain, but it proved ominously resistant to the Chinese COVID vaccines upon its initial discovery in Peru. Still, Russo said there are hopeful signs that the U.S. vaccines will fare better.

"It's too early to tell, but we do think the vaccine is working against [the] variant as well," Russo said.
