Elections officials in New Orleans today will recount the vote in the sheriff's department millage, which won renewal by just two votes in Saturday's election.

Louisiana pollster John Couvillon, owner of JMC Analytics, says that's an exceptionally small margin, something you just don't see often in Louisiana.

While most votes are taken electronically, with results not as likely to change in a recount, Couvillon says there were around 3,700 mail-in ballots in this election.

"So, you can have things change, when you recount the mail ballots," he said.

Couvillon said elections officials will not only be hand-recounting those, they'll have to check and make sure there were no errors in filling in the ballot, and make sure only ballots that arrived by the deadline are counted.

"It's not impossible, but that's going to be the population that will be interesting to me; will be that 3,700 mail-in votes," Couvillon said.

An official in Criminal Clerk of Court Ed Lombard's office told NOLA.com that the recount is set for 1 p.m. in room 319 at Orleans Civil District Court.
