The members of the Orleans Parish Communications District Board will meet in an emergency session next week to discuss possible criminal allegations against OPCD director Tyrell Morris.
According to our partners at WWL-TV, district board chairman John Thomas told his fellow board members and other city officials via email that the meeting would take place on Thursday “to discuss the incident involving Director Tyrell Morris.” Thomas also said he’s been conducting his own investigation into the incident in question, a May 7 car crash involving Morris and his take-home city-owned vehicle.
“This is separate from the IG investigation and the news stories,” Thomas wrote. “This is an independent fact-finding investigation and (I) would like you all to be updated on what has been taking place thus far.”
Records released amid a WWL-TV public records request and amid the New Orleans Inspector General’s Office showed that Morris changed an official policy four days after the crash to make it seem as if he didn’t have to take a drug and alcohol test, despite the original policy saying that he did.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell has stood by Morris, saying that she would not suspend him pending the investigation despite calls to do so by council members J. P. Morrell and Helena Moreno. Morris has already said that he will resign in September.
