Abortion is now illegal in Louisiana following the Supreme Court of the United States’ final decision which overturns Roe v. Wade combined with a modified state “trigger law” signed by Governor John Bel Edwards this week.
The SCOTUS decision to uphold a Mississippi abortion ban law, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, in effect overturns the 1973 Roe V. Wade which now gives individual states the right to decide their own abortion laws.
Governor Edwards signed state legislation into law which modified the state’s “trigger law” which goes into effect and now outlaws abortions in Louisiana
The changes to the state trigger law does not criminally punish pregnant women, but doctors or others who perform abortion could be sentenced to up to 10 years.
The bill replaces a 2006 trigger law that would have banned abortion without exception.
