A Baton Rouge 3-year-old was killed in his own bed Tuesday night when he was struck by a stray bullet from a gunfight outside his home.
Devin Page Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police investigating the incident found Page’s home riddled with dozens of bullet holes even though they do not believe it was even the target of the gunfight that broke out in front of the house, according to WBRZ.
A separate incident occurred next door to Page’s home just days earlier, when gunfire pierced that house and ended up injuring a child. So far the two incidents remain unconnected as police work on identifying suspects in both.
Both houses are on Fairfields Avenue, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
The mayor’s office issued a statement on Page’s death Wednesday, which can be read below:
“The tragic overnight killing of a young child on Fairfields Avenue is a sad reminder that our community has a long way to go in addressing gun violence. This tragedy is beyond unacceptable. Someone in our community knows who is responsible and they must come forward.
At this moment our community needs to refocus. Beginning Good Friday I am calling for a Week of Peace. Week over week community members join together in planning activities of hope, but there is a small percentage that still continue to choose violence.
I implore individuals to settle their disputes with words rather than with violence. The outcomes from choosing violence are never hopeful. Choose hope and choose peace”
