Organizers of the effort to recall New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell today held a news conference to update their progress one month after officially starting the effort to gather signatures.

"Right now we have garnered 20% of the signatures that we need to recall this mayor," Recall Vice Chair Eileen Carter said.

She noted they have until Ash Wednesday on February 22nd to get the more than 50,000 registered voters' signatures and force a recall election.

If this pace continues, they would have the needed numbers a month early.

She and Recall Chair Belden "Noonie Man" Batiste urged everyone unhappy with things in New Orleans to join the effort and sign the petition.

"There are a lot of lies and garbage being told.  The mayor does not care.  She does not care," he said. "She has neglected her duties, and we need a mayor that cares."

He added, however, that if voters are not unhappy with Mayor Cantrell; they do not need to get involved.

"If you satisfied with the way the city look, don't sign a petition; but if you not satisfied and you disagree, sign a petition."

There is information at nolatoya.org how to find an event to sign a petition.

Cantrell today said about the recall effort, "What I have experienced personally as I move across the city is again nothing but love, nothing but support and nothing but just the words of encouragement to keep going."
