In celebration of this Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell posted photos on social media of a new sculpture gracing Lafayette Square.
Along with the reveal of this particular sculpture came the announcement that the city had set aside $7.2 million for further art expenditures.
"In addition, we have already purchased over 60 pieces of artwork created by local Black artists to be displayed in our public buildings," Cantrell wrote on the Facebook post.
Cantrell wrote that Lafayette Square's new artwork represents hard-fought freedoms. "We know that it does not come without struggles, without fights, and without protests for more than 200 years," she wrote.
