The boy found shot to death on Michoud Boulevard in New Orleans East on Monday, is now identified by the Orleans Parish coroner.

The coroner’s office identified the boy as 12-year-old Derrick Cash.

Authorities say Cash was shot to death before 10:00 a.m. Monday morning. Construction workers nearby discovered his body lying near the street in a remote area of the 14000 block of Michoud Boulevard.

A worker near the scene tells The Times-Picayune | The Advocate he didn’t hear any gunshots but saw a person stumble out of a black Jeep Cherokee and “gasping for air.”

“He was in pain,” the worker, Reg Bouie, told reporters. Bouie says the boy was not coherent and unresponsive.

Detectives are still working the investigation and no further details are available at this time.
