Plans for how Troop NOLA will operate are still in development.

Louisiana State Police Lt. Melissa Matey says the planning is in progress.

"We’re working right now to finalize operational and staffing plans to put a permanent troop in the city of New Orleans," said Matey.

The plan is to have 40 troopers embedded in New Orleans. Matey said their presence will help bolster the NOPD's depleted ranks, "to help curb the violent crime in and around the French Quarter but also in other areas of the city and we’re going to work very closely with the New Orleans Police Department on any of those finalized plans.".

State police, meanwhile, are launching their own recruiting drive, because declining police numbers aren't just a New Orleans problem -- Lt. Matey says  it's something affecting police forces at all levels.

"This is a recruiting section that we are happy to have," said Matey. "They are going to be solely focused on recruiting the best and the brightest, not just people from Louisiana but also from outside of our state."
