Even though Louisiana isn't likely to be a battleground state this election cycle, candidates are taking to the airwaves -- even incumbents. Republican incumbent Senator John Kennedy has started running ads for his reelection campaign, and Democratic challenger Luke Mixon is on the air as well.
Political analyst John Couvillon with JMC Analytics says he doesn't expect Louisiana to be a battleground, but even an incumbent as heavily favored as Kennedy needs to advertise.
"The reality is he does have to have a campaign, which would involve running ads, typically after Labor Day," said Couvillon.
As for challenger Luke Mixon, Couvillon says if he's to have any chance, "he absolutely has to prove he's legitimate, because unless you've been following social media, you wouldn't really know that he exists."
Couvillon says the same holds true for senate candidate Gary Chambers, whom he expects to turn up in wider run campaign ads, too.
"All the digital ads and so forth that he's doing will only take you so far, plus Chambers does have pretty decent funding," Couvillon said, "so I would fully expect to see some Chambers ads at some point in the very near future."
