Everyone should register now for FEMA assistance

FEMA has announced that federal disaster assistance has been made available to individuals in the areas impacted by Hurricane Ida.

Register now at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362.  You can also use the FEMA Mobile App.

The presidential Major Disaster Declaration is in place for everyone in Ascension, Assumption, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberia, Iberville, Jefferson, Lafourche, Livingston, Orleans, Plaquemines, Pointe Coupee, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Martin, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, Washington, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana parishes.

"Louisiana homeowners and renters affected by Hurricane Ida who live in parishes that have recently been designated for Individual Assistance could be eligible for help from FEMA," according to a news release.

FEMA stresses that if you have homeowners or renters insurance, you should file a claim as soon as possible.

"By law, FEMA cannot duplicate benefits for losses covered by insurance. If you are uninsured or underinsured, you may be eligible for federal assistance."

When you apply for assistance, have the following information readily available:

-A current phone number where you can be contacted
-Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying
-Your Social Security number, if available
-A general list of damage and losses
-If insured, the policy number or the agent and/or the company name

Disaster assistance may include financial help for temporary lodging and home repairs along with other programs to assist families recover from the effects of the event.
