In a 26-12 vote, the Louisiana Senate today approved to override Governor John Bel Edwards’ veto of a bill that would allow transgender student-athletes to compete in girls’ sports at public schools.
Protesters opposing the veto override shouted from the chamber balcony as they were forcefully removed. Representative Mandie Landry posted the incident to social media.
It now has to go to the state House for a two-thirds vote needed to complete the override.
The bill is one of a few bills vetoed by the governor in June. Another bill, which would allow gun owners to conceal-carry without a permit, is also considered likely for a veto override.
