
Nationwide, nearly one of every 15 COVID deaths was a Louisiana resident during the month of August, according to the Louisiana Department of Health and national totals by the New York Times.
Since August 1, there have been 354 COVID deaths reported by the state, giving Louisiana 6.5% of all of the 5,444 such deaths in the U.S.

The New York Times COVID tracker also places Louisiana at the head of the pack in terms of cases per capita over the last two weeks – 120 for every 100,000 residents at a clip of 5,571 new cases each day. The state also leads in COVID deaths per capita.
And when it comes to overall cases, Louisiana is fourth over the last 14 days, behind more heavily-populated states like Florida (1st), Texas (2nd) and California (3rd).
