One of the contributing factors to last week's New Orleans jailbreak is too few staff for too may inmates, says Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill. She says that the jail population needs to be "right-sized."
"We've got to reduce the number of people that are in that jail," Murrill told WWL's Newell Normand.
The attorney general says that's something the state needs to take a look at, from finding ways to speed up trials for defendants awaiting their day in court or other means of getting a better guard-to-inmate ratio.
"I'm looking right now at solving for some particular issues that I think are going to help us make sure that the facility is secure and properly staffed," Murrill said. "I'm going to be looking at kind of short-term, immediate crisis recommendations, intermediate-term recommendations, and long-term recommendations. And I'll be talking to everyone that touches this prison."
