The New Orleans Police Department is working to find who may be responsible for a shooting that killed a man and woman early Monday morning.
Police say the fatal shooting happened at the intersection of North Broad Avenue and Bayou Road.
The initial investigation has revealed that both victims were inside of a car driving riverbound on Bayou Road toward North Broad Avenue. At some point, another vehicle pulled up next to them and opened fire before fleeing on Broad Avenue.
“At around 1:29 a.m., NOPD First District officers responded to an aggravated battery by shooting call at the location. Upon arrival, officers found a male and female victim suffering with a gunshot wound(s). Both victims were transported to the hospital where the woman (23 years old) was pronounced dead, and the man (25 years old) is in critical condition,” the NOPD said in an initial report.
Authorities say the male later died from his injuries at hospital.
Homicides by shooting in the Bayou St. John area have not happened as often as in other neighborhoods in the city. According to New Orleans City Council’s Crime Dashboard, there was only one homicide by shooting reported in Bayou St. John, while fatal shootings across all neighborhoods are up to a total of 95 for 2021. That is up from 86 homicides in 2020.
