New Orleans Metro Area COVID case numbers and percent positivity have dipped noticeably over the last week according to city officials and the State Department of Health. Does this mean Omicron will largely be tamed by the time the big parades roll next month?
Dr. Ben Springate with LSU Health New Orleans told WWL the recent trend is very promising.
“We’d like to see that continue and make sure that it is a stable trend, but that is certainly a start that we are looking forward to,” said Springgate.
Other countries, and even other states, have seen community transmission return to pre-Omicron levels just a few weeks after their Omicron peak.
Springgate said there are differences in our population compared to other states and nations, but it’s possible we could be exiting the Omicron surge by next month.
“We do want to get to that point where it is better by the time Carnival Season gets around,” said Springgate. “We just need to ask everyone to do all of the things that public health authorities are asking them to do.”
