A police officer from New Orleans was shot and killed while dining at a Houston restaurant, Houston authorities report.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner says the officer was one of two people shot while eating on the patio of the Grotto Ristorante on Westheimer Road in Houston.

"I spoke with the family, I spoke with Superintendent Shaun Ferguson. He's with her right now," said Finner.

The other victim is in critical condition at a Houston hospital.

Police say two armed men approached the restaurant's patio and demanded diners hand over their belongings. Witnesses say the group complied, but at some point, shots were fired and the two suspects fled. Police say the robbers ended up leaving with nothing.

Police did not identify the victims, but Chief Finner says the officer was the father of two children.
