New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is not considering changes to the citywide indoor mask mandate at this time, her spokesman said today. New Orleans Communications Director Beau Tidwell said despite Gov. John Bel Edwards' announcement that the statewide mandate is being lifted, city leaders will want to take a closer look at the data.
"There's not going to be any change for use today, until the mayor and (city health department director) Dr. Avegno have had the opportunity to review the changes that are actually going into effect at the state level," said Tidwell.
The city's mandate first went back into effect July 21, and Gov. Edwards instituted a statewide mandate August 4 as the Delta surge was on the rise. The governor extended the statewide mask mandate twice since, even as the surge had waned.
Currently, the state is its lowest level of COVID related hospitalizations since July 4, now down to 323, down nine from yesterday.
