NOPD Chief: I'll 'shut these streets down at the first sign of that snow'

New Orleans Police chief Ann Kirkpatrick says if we get snow and ice in the precipitation in next week's forecast, she doesn't want drivers stranded on elevated roadways or worse, getting into wrecks.

"That's why I'm going to be proactive and shut these streets down at the first sign of that snow coming in," Kirkpatrick said. "I'm not going to wait until you're out there on those streets and then I shut it down."

Kirkpatrick says she'll trade the inconvenience for motorists if it means fewer situations where first responders will be put at risk trying to reach a crash scene on an iced-over bridge or overpass.

"Think in terms of off-ramps and on-ramps on the interstate," the chief said of which streets will get blocked. "Think about your bridges, any of the high-rises, because those are going to freeze first."
