NOPD Chief: Suspect opens fire on officers, 1 woman injured

A domestic disturbance in Gentilly leads to a shootout with NOPD officers and a woman shot in the abdomen according to NOPD Chief Shaun Ferguson.

Ferguson says around 12:30 a.m. Monday, officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call at a home in the 2000 block of Mirabeau Avenue.

When the responding officers arrived, Ferguson says the suspect, 30-year-old Wilton Anderson, opened fire on the officers.

The officers returned fire, hitting Anderson in the leg as he was fleeing the scene. Anderson was later caught by NOPD officers and was arrested. No officers were injured in the shootout.

Chief Ferguson says a 25-year-old woman was shot in the stomach in the incident. He says they believe Anderson shot the woman but an investigation is underway. The woman is being treated for her wound at a hospital.

He says the woman is related to Anderson but declined to say how they were related.

The two officers involved in the incident are placed on administrative duty said, Ferguson. He also says both officers have been on the force for just over one year.
