Crews have collected nearly 10,000 gallons of what officials call "oily liquids" after an oil spill over the weekend off the Louisiana Coast in lower Plaquemines Parish.
"To date, oil spill removal organizations have recovered an approximate total of 9,492 gallons of oily liquids," according to a news release.
The Coast Guard says more than 150 responders are involved in the effort near Garden Island Bay.
"This includes the deployment of 6 MARCO skimmers, 4 drum skimmers, and a variety of recovery storage equipment. Boom deployment continues, with 7,800 feet of 18” containment boom already in place, 2,000 feet en route, and 6,400 feet on standby. Responders have also deployed 382 bales of absorbent boom to protect nearby islands."
It still remains unclear what led to the spill.
"The cause of the incident is under investigation."
Sources from the Coast Guard say the release came from Spectrum OpCo's shut-in Well #59 at the Garden Island Bay Production Facility.
