St. Charles Parish President Matt Jewell says at least one person is dead from severe weather. He has declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather.

St. Charles emergency officials say they have reports of damage in the Killona area. There are reports of power lines down and roads being impassable.

"There are a lot of downed power lines, and there are injuries and a fatality at this time," Jewell told WWL-TV.

Jewell did not have details on the circumstances of the fatality.

"We had a likely tornado touch down near Nelson Coleman Correctional Facility in the Killona area," he said. "It moved northward through the Killona community and across the river into Montz."

Jewell said they also have reports of some damaged homes in Montz.

Search-and-rescue teams have been sent to the affected areas.
