St. Tammany Parish voters issued a resounding no to the proposed Camellia Bay development in a 63%-37% vote.
The ballot referendum pitted celebrities like former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and chef John Folse against St. Tammany Sheriff Randy Smith and Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal.
Brees endorsed the casino last month, touting a $35 million youth sports complex the developers promised St. Tammany Parish. Folse and Brees also would have been partners in a restaurant that was to be part of the development.
Law enforcement argued against the casino, saying crimes such as drug and sex trafficking follow casino developments.
