Former New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley says Mayor LaToya Cantrell failed to pay a settlement he reached with the city of New Orleans, and now wants to reopen his lawsuit, WWL-TV reports.
Riley sued in 2018 claiming the mayor withdrew a job offer to be director of public safety and homeland security. Cantrell said she reconsidered Riley for the position after hearing from residents who said Riley's oversight of police killings in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was too lax.
The original suit sought $700,000 in damages. Last month, the city announced a settlement with Riley for undisclosed terms.
"It is a substantial injustice to allow the Defendant, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, to break her word, yet again, at Mr. Riley’s expense," said Riley's motion to reopen the lawsuit.
