St. Bernard Parish School Board member Darleen Pitre Asevedo has died after catching COVID.
Her daughter, Kortney Asevedo, made the announcement over the weekend.
"This morning my mom dropped dead," she said in a post on Facebook. "She did not want to die!"
Kortney Asevedo said her mother didn't seek medical treatment after falling ill August 2nd.
Darleen Asevedo was 62 and tested positive for COVID six days later.
Her daughter said that on August 13th it got worse.
"My dad said she was very flu like sick and he wanted her to go to the hospital. They didn’t go," she posted.
The next day she died.
"August 14th 8:45 am My mom calls out for help she’s sitting in her bed. My sister comes ,my mom tells my sister to get my dad. Before they get back my mom is gone. My sister did chest compressions on her. EMS came and took her , the hospital said she had no pulse."
Doctors could not revive her.
Her daughter says that Darleen kept her illness quiet.
"I think she was ashamed to tell people she had gotten COVID Bc they would blame her for being out there living her life," she posted. "It’s not fair , it’s unbelievable, it hurts. She was cheated ,we are all being cheated. She needs me to be her voice right now. She would of never left us like this. She didn’t want to die."
Darleen Asevedo had been on the school board in St. Bernard since 2010.
Days before her mother died, Kortney Asevedo posted a pair of links to the group "Unmask St. Tammany." She thanked people who testified against the St. Tammany schools mask mandate, telling them they were "brave" for testifying at the school board meeting where parents were speaking out against the requirement that all students five and older wear masks.
