A Georgia man convicted of raping a young girl over the span of five years will serve the rest of his life in prison.
A St. Tammany Parish judge sentenced Jacques Anthony Garnett to life without parole in Friday. In April, a jury convicted Garrett, 56, on a charge of first-degree rape of a victim under the age of 13.
Garrett is a relative of the victim, whom he first raped when she was six-years-old. The victim's mother caught Garnett in a room with her daughter and saw him trying to zip up his pants. That's when, according to prosecutors, the child told her mother about the abuse.
District Attorney Warren Montgomery says forensic interviews confirmed the Garnett repeatedly sexually abused the victim, with the crimes happening in Slidell and other parts of Louisiana.
