The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office says it has been busy taking illegal narcotics and weapons off the streets.

"The numbers speak for themselves," said Sheriff Randy Smith. "We have men and women dedicated to identifying and arresting the individuals who are transporting and selling illegal narcotics in our neighborhoods."

During the last quarter, the sheriff's office says it has arrested 94 people on felony drug charges, and has made 53 misdemeanor drug arrests.

Nearly a dozen of those arrests involved fentanyl, an opioid that often leads to fatal drug overdose.

"Fentanyl is a very dangerous drug and it is no secret that it is in our community," Sheriff Smith said. "“It is my goal to see to it that the people who are creating and selling these fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills are arrested and those pills are taken off the streets of St. Tammany."

The sheriff's office says it has seized, in total, more than 11 pounds of fentanyl since August 1.

In addition to the drugs, deputies have confiscated 28 illegal firearms in that time. The sheriff's office says these guns were either stolen, possessed by convicted felons, or found in the presence of drugs.
