Crime continues to drop in New Orleans, and it's something state officials say people need to realize, especially with Super Bowl LIX just a few months away.

Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser says the work of Troop NOLA in the French Quarter has helped improve public safety in the city's oldest neighborhood. He told WWL's Newell Normand he was so impressed that he gave Troop NOLA his office in the Cabildo.

"I went in and looked at the cameras, and what they're doing catching people before they're committing the crimes, and I was so impressed and asked, 'what else can I do?' and they said 'well, if we had more space,' so we moved the Friends of the Cabildo out of the second and third floor, gave them my office at the Cabildo, and gave the state police all three floors." said Nungesser.

Nungesser said a successful Super Bowl serves as free advertising for other big events. The Lt. Gov. said that it is crucial that people attending those events form great memories while they are here.

"And not leaving with bad taste in their mouth, but leaving with the things we all remember: the great time they had," he said.

According to the New Orleans Metropolitan Crime Commission, nonfatal shootings, armed robberies, and carjackings have fallen below their 2019 levels so far this year, and homicide has fallen every year since 2020.
