We are in fog season. It has also been mixing with wildfire smoke. Here are some things drivers can do to minimize the danger:
"Turn those headlights on," says Louisiana State Police Trooper Kate Stegall.
That may seem obvious, but Trooper Stegall says drivers should not rely on their cars "auto-on" feature for headlights in the fog, and should switch them on themselves.
And she says to make sure it is the low beams, because brights will just reflect off the fog and into your face.
"It actually limits your visibility," she explained.
And don't drive with the hazard lights flashing. Trooper Stegall say that can actually disorient other drivers.
"The flashing of the lights almost resets your depth perception every time they flash, so its very hard to determine that depth perception, and that's something that we absolutely need in foggy conditions."
And she says slowing down will give drivers more time to react, and if they can't react in time, "should a crash occur, the reduced speed will help minimize the potential of injuries."
