Too divisive? Audubon Institute cancels NOPD promotion

The Audubon Nature Institute says it is canceling a six-day promotion known as "Blue at the Zoo." The non-profit said in a statement that the event, which offered discounted admission to anyone wearing blue as a show of support for police, that "this event could be unintentionally divisive."

The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reports the institute said an announcement last week led to feedback that convinced it to cancel the promotion.

The decision to cancel comes following the murder and manslaughter conviction of white Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin for killing George Floyd, an African-American man. Floyd's death prompted demonstrations against police brutality around the country, including New Orleans.

While some protests turned into riots, demonstrations in New Orleans were mainly peaceful, until a June 3 incident in which NOPD used teargas and other riot-control measures to stop demonstrators from marching across the Crescent City Connection.

Some of those demonstrators are suing the NOPD in federal court.
