Wednesday's severe weather caused at least one death, knocked out power to nearly 40,000 customers, and damaged hundreds of buildings in the New Orleans area.

The fatality was reported in St. Charles Parish. Parish President Matt Jewell says the twister touched down in the Killona area on the Westbank.

"We had a likely tornado touch down near Nelson Coleman Correctional facility," said Jewell. "There is one confirmed fatality."

Jefferson Parish also suffered apparently extensive damage on its Westbank. Council member Scott Walker says it started in Marrero around Westbank Expressway and Avenue D.

"From what we could guess, a mile, maybe more of damage that started a few blocks on the other side of the Westbank Expressway and probably went up to Hoss Memtsas Stadium, which is a long stretch of powerlines down, rooftops blown off," said Walker.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says the storm ripped the roof off of its training academy and firing range in Harvey.

Gretna Police Chief Arthur Lawson said hundreds of homes were damaged, and said it was worse than any hurricane.

St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis says they have reported roof damage to structures in Arabi, in the same areas affected by a tornado that struck in March. McInnis says this time, the damage does not appear to be as extensive.

New Orleans officials reported damage to parts of Algiers in the area of Gen. Meyer Ave. Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Colin Arnold says a handful of people had to be taken to the hospital for injuries.
