A retail giant from childhood memories is making a return. Toys “R” Us announced plans to open ten new stores nationwide plus a handful of pop-up locations this holiday season. One of those pop-ups opens today in Lakeside Shopping Center.
LSU economist Dr. Jim Richardson says the move reflects careful planning.
“Corporate heads would not take the chance if they didn’t think there was success to be had,” he said. “Most likely, they’ve done extensive research and found that enough people want to come back to a brick-and-mortar store.”
Richardson says the return could point to a larger trend in retail.
“People are probably realizing that buying things over the internet is void of experience and that opens the door for other brands, especially in clothing and electronics, to try the same thing.”
He also points to the resurgence of bookstores as a model. “They’re not just selling books anymore. They’ve added coffee shops, paraphernalia, and other items that provide a total experience.”
Richardson says no doubt other old school brands are taking notice and if Toys R Us connects with a new generation of those who don't want to grow up, they will also come out and play.
