Louisiana's top tourism promoter is going back on earlier predictions of a "best year ever."
"We're not going to reach that record," said Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser, and the reason, he says, is international travelers' displeasure with President Trump.
"I've been on conference calls with mayors, tourism folks from Canada, and while they still love Louisiana, they just can't get folks to put America on their list of travel this year," Nungesser told WWL's Newell Normand.
"The longer it stays, that attitude and that dislike for America because of the tariffs stays in place, it's going to hurt our tourism numbers here in Louisiana greatly," he said.
Nungesser said that Canadians in particular make up 40 percent of Louisiana's international tourist clientele, saying he's hearing from all over the state about canceled trips.
