Violent crime strikes New Orleans again over weekend

Five shootings including two homicides, a carjacking, an armed robbery, and a rape—all happening within a 24-hour span—are the latest violent crimes the New Orleans Police Department is investigating.

The first shooting happened just before 9 p.m. Saturday on Ursula Spencer Way at Pleasure Street in the Upper Ninth Ward. According to the NOPD major offense log, the victim was walking to a friend’s house when someone in a passing car shot him in the thigh. The victim took himself to the hospital.

The second shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Sunday on South Claiborne at St. Andrew in Central City. Police say the victim was walking down the road when someone got out of a car and shot him. The victim suffered multiple body wounds. An EMS crew transported the victim to a hospital.

The third shooting happened around 7 a.m. on Kerlerec Street between Rampart and Burgundy Streets in the Fauberg Marigny. Police say they found the victim dead of multiple gunshot wounds when they arrived on scene.

The fourth shooting happened on Iberville Street at Crozat Street in the Tremé. According to an NOPD spokesperson, officers were called to the scene around 2 p.m. Sunday. The spokesperson says a man suffered an undisclosed wound, while a woman was grazed by a bullet.

The fifth shooting happened around 8 p.m. Sunday on South Robertson Street near Toledano. Police say a man was grazed by a bullet.

The French Quarter and the Central Business District were the scenes of three of the other violent crimes reported by the NOPD late Saturday into early Sunday.

The first happened just after 3 a.m. Sunday on North Rampart at St. Louis in the edge of the Vieux Carré. Police say the victim picked up three women from a hotel. The women pulled a gun on the driver after they got in the car. The suspects forced the driver to bring them to Baudin Street in Mid-City, where they got out of the car and ran away. The NOPD is classifying this case as an abduction.

About 45 minutes later, police responded to a rape call on Bourbon Street. According to the major offense log, no other details about the case are known.

Police responded to an armed robbery in the Central Business District around 4:35 a.m. Sunday. Police say the victim, a man, got into a white SUV with two women near the intersection of Baronne and Poydras. One of the women snatched the victim’s phone and wallet while he was sitting in the back seat. When the man tried to get take back his belongings, one of the women stabbed him in the arm. An EMS crew took the victim to the hospital.

The last non-shooting happened around 5:15 a.m. in St. Roch. Police say a man was standing at the corner of Franklin Avenue and North Galvez Street when the suspect approached him asking for a light. The suspect the. Pulled a gun on the victim and demanded his car keys. The victim gave the suspect his keys and drove off in the victim’s car.
