Wet, warm spring weather is upon us

Louisiana has seen some absolutely wild weather swings already this year, even though we’re only three months into the year. The year began with snow and has seen heavy rains as weather warms.

LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says spring is an especially volatile season in the state. “We see more thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes in the spring than we do any other time of year. We also see a lot of potential for flooding in the spring,” Keim goes on to say.

Keim emphasizes that being prepared for the unexpected may be your best path moving forward. “Every season brings something to the table in New Orleans, but spring can be especially unstable,” adds Keim.

He also notes that an overall warming trend is making the weather more unpredictable in the region. “There are some very unusual things going on with the climate. We’re absolutely warming and winters are getting milder, so it’s something we’re definitely going to have to get used to,” notes Keim.
