June 15 was just a normal day for two pit bulls in North Carolina hanging out in a kiddie pool in front of their home. Until they were shot.
“While my mom and sister were watching the pups play in their doggie pool in the driveway, the dogs [Fred and Saki] saw their neighbor walking in the woods and ran over to him,” explained Jill Edgar Miller on a GoFundMe page she established for her sister Meg Edgar’s dogs. “He shot them in a matter of seconds. Saki, once in the neck and Fred [three times] in the chest, stomach and leg.”
Saki’s wound was thankfully not serious, though it might have been if it was a centimeter up or down, said Miller. Fred, on the other hand, struggled with a bullet that went through his chest and exited out his stomach.
He was sent to a specialist veterinarian in Greenville, S.C., for treatment.
A bullet that just missed the dog’s heart will leave fragments behind forever and his tail was trimmed to a nub and he needed a chest tube, said Miller. While he struggled with his injured leg, his vets do not think it will need amputation.
By June 18, Fred was up and walking, to the amazement of his owners, and the next day he was able to go back home.
“All in all for what this bubbas encountered he’s a legend,” said Miller.
Fred was a bit grumpy after his surgeries and a little exhausted from his medication, but he continues to get better, according to Miller.
A few days after returning home he started eating full meals and getting up by himself. He was expected to get staples from his surgery removed July 1, just in time for the holiday weekend.
“Thank you to all the prayer warriors that have prayed and everyone else sending all the positive vibes and support,” said Miller.
With $23,815 in donations, the GoFundMe for Fred has already surpassed its $20,000 goal.
