Two people were hurt after a shooting broke out at Alabama A&M University on Tuesday, prompting a lockdown at the school, authorities shared.
The Huntsville Police Department said that Willie Brandon Nance, 23, one of the people involved in the shooting, was booked in Madison County Jail on Wednesday morning for aggravated assault.
The other person involved in the shooting is still hospitalized, a spokesperson for the police department shared with WAFF.
Police noted that the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident, stemming from an argument between two people that escalated into them shooting at each other, the spokesperson said.
Their injuries were said to be minor. The identity of the second person has not yet been released.
There was never an active shooter threat on the school’s campus, the spokesperson added.
Several students at the school said the incident started because of an argument about food, but the exact details are still unclear.
The Huntsville Police Department has taken over the investigation, and police shared that investigators are currently looking to obtain assault-non-family-gun warrants for the two people involved.
Dr. Daniel Wims, President of Alabama A&M, released a statement on Wednesday morning following the events of the shooting.
“The safety and well-being of our students and campus community will always be our top priority,” Wims said. “We deeply regret the distress caused by the unfortunate incident on our campus yesterday and want to assure you that we are taking every measure to maintain the ongoing safety and security of our campus.”
Campus police chief Montrez Payton shared that he is glad no other students were injured and thanked them for their haste in notifying campus police about what was happening.
“These are some dangerous times that we’re in,” Payton said. “It’s important for our students to know that this is a safe campus. It’s important when you see situations like this with fights or things that escalate, that students will say something so we can get involved and just stay safe.”
