A 73-year-old woman was watching as those with her attempted to reel in a 100-pound sailfish to their boat off the coast of Florida, but ended up taking a trip to the hospital instead.
The woman, Katherine Perkins, is from Maryland and was struck by the fish in the groin area when it jumped out of the water on Tuesday, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Perkins was standing on the boat when two of her companions hooked the fish on their line. They began reeling it in to try and get a picture with the prize fish when things took a turn.
The sailfish reportedly “jumped out of the water and stabbed Katherine in the groin area while she was standing next to the center console” on the boat, according to the sheriff’s office.
Perkins told law enforcement she had no time to react as the fish came out of nowhere quickly.
The fishing boat was located almost two miles off the shore of Stuart, Florida, in the Atlantic ocean just north of Palm Beach, the sheriff’s office said.
According to officials, those with Perkins applied pressure to her wound as she was taken to a local hospital for treatment, although her condition has not been shared.
