The New Orleans Mayor’s race is more a coronation than a contest but there’s still a few other competitive races on the Crescent City ballot this year. Political analyst Clancy DuBos told WWL the one that’s drawing the most interest at the moment is the race for the Division Two Council At Large seat.
Four names are on the ballot but it’s now seen as largely a contest between former State Lawmaker JP Morrell and current Councilwoman Kristen Gisleson Palmer. Both have raised roughly $400,000 as of the latest campaign finance report.
“What’s interesting is that both Palmer and Morrell are not, particularly, in the Mayor’s corner,” said DuBos. “The Mayor would have preferred to see Jared Brossett.
There was a big shakeup in the race last week when Brossett was hit with a DWI after allegedly being found passed out in his car outside of the Brother’s Food Mart on Elysian Fields. Days later he issued a statement saying he was suspending his campaign. DuBos noted that decision to only suspend, and not formally withdraw from the race could have a major impact.
“Because he has not officially withdrawn from the race any votes that he gets will be counted and that makes it more difficult for someone to get a majority,” said DuBos.
Early voting begins Saturday, election day is November 13th, and a potential runoff would be held December 11th.
