By saying that the shortage of NOP officers could lead to the cancellation of Mardi Gras in 2023, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has once again showcased her bully mentality.

During a town hall meeting Thursday night, Mayor Cantrell dropped a bomb on the attendees: if the city does not have an adequate number of police officers - then Mardi Gras will be cancelled next year.

Mayor Cantrell has been part of the problem of NOPD officers resigning and not having enough new recruits coming in. Many resigning NOPD officers have said that the culture of favoritism in the department motivated them to retire. The Mayor of New Orleans appoints the police chief and has a lot to do with the culture and attitude of our police department.

The mere threat that if the city can’t convince enough officers to stay and attract enough new recruits to join the force - then Mardi Gras 2023 will be cancelled once again shows that our mayor is acting like a child. She is trying to blame everything but herself for the problems that exist.

Mayor Cantrell is willing to use cancelling an event integral to the image and economic success of our city as a way of reminding us about the power she holds. The threat to cancel Mardi Gras next year seems to be her way of turning to the public for blame and solutions to the police shortage - problems that fall on her office.

And even if Mardi Gras 2023 could be threatened by an inadequate number of NOPD officers - this is NOT the time to issue such a juvenile threat.

Shame on Mayor Cantrell for creating unrest among the city’s citizens by threatening to cancel Mardi Gras. She is, again, refusing to accept responsibility for her behavior and decisions as mayor of New Orleans.
