It has all the elements of a soap opera with drama, human conflict, race, politics, cheating, lying, and cliffhangers to keep you tuned it. But it’s not a soap opera - it’s the on-going saga of an arrogant mayor who sees herself as royalty and is fleecing her citizens.
It is the story of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
After Mayor Cantrell was caught misusing nearly $30,000 of taxpayers’ dollars to fly first class, she arrogantly announced that she had NO intention of paying back the city for the misuse of funds. City policy dictates ALL city employees book the cheapest airfare available for travels on behalf of the city. Cantrell decided she should be flying first class, and she stated that the city ordinance regarding travel does not apply to her.
With a list of excuses that includes playing the race card, claiming she is the target of a Republican plot to remove her from office, and insisting that her anxiety is the reason she must fly first class, Mayor LaToya Cantrell has presented herself as an entitled politician who suffers from PES - politician entitlement syndrome.
Cantrell’s flimsy excuses for why she needs to fly first class have been rejected by logic and a vacuum of facts. The City Council is considering docking the mayor’s paycheck in order to recoup the nearly $30,000 of misused city funds.
Yesterday, a city attorney appointed by Mayor Cantrell, Donesia Turner, concluded that Mayor Cantrell is a city employee and therefore owes the city nearly $30,000 for her luxury travel.
Between the City Council threatening to dock her pay to the judgement that she is a city employee and now owes the city of New Orleans nearly $30,000, it must be an unbearable situation for the mind and personality of an arrogant narcissist.
Here’s the cliffhanger: Mayor Cantrell has been backed into a corner and there are compelling reasons to watch her next steps. What will Cantrell do now? Her own city attorney ruled against her because she is an attorney that respects laws.
Will Cantrell finally apologize for her misjudgment of flying first class? Will she continue to come up with more excuses as to why she must fly first class and maintain her position as a politician who is above the law? Will she continue to look for ways to blame the media for her behavior?
Any similarity between the attitude of Mayor Cantrell and another politician still in the news is not coincidental.
BTW: Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and his staff are flying to London today to meet with a group of multinational business leaders and probably to be at the Saints/Vikings game Sunday. Gov. Edwards and his staff are flying coach.
