Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards told reporters Thursday night that he plans to veto three bills lawmakers passed in the just ended lawmaking session.

One bans minors from surgeries and medications to alter their birth gender.

Another says teachers and school employees can refer to students by their birth name and gender, regardless of a student’s chosen pronouns and names.

The third bans educators from discussing gender and sexual identity with students in public schools.

During the post-session news conference, Edwards was asked if he would veto the bills.

"That is my expectation," he replied. The Democrat added, "The judgement of history, I believe, will be very clear...It will be as clear as the judgement of history has been on those who didn't want civil rights in the '50s, for example."

It is not clear if supporters of the measures will have the support needed to return to the capitol to try and override the vetoes.
