“Project Runway” designer Geoffrey Mac was among the people who said Wooden had succumbed to the virus, which has killed 131 people in New York City as of Tuesday.
“I lost my best friend today from the coronavirus, Nashom Wooden,” Mac said through tears in an Instagram post Monday. “I just want to make sure that everybody out there stays healthy and takes care of each other, because the virus is really real. And I’m just so sorry.”
Wooden was 50 years old.
Wooden is best known for his drag performances in Manhattan's nightlife scene. He started performing as Mona Foot in 1989 and had retired by 2017, according to Paper Magazine.
Wooden performed one more time as Mona Foot, in a Wonder Woman outfit, at Wigstock in Brooklyn in 2018.
He also was part of “My Pet Homo,” an off-Broadway show with RuPaul and was cast in the 1999 film “Flawless.” He was a singer for The Ones, for which he co-wrote the song “Flawless.”
Wooden has since been working at the Cock, an East Village gay bar, as a bartender, doorman and DJ, according to Paper Magazine.
Wigstock Co-Founder Scott Lifshutz told Paper Magazine that he saw Wooden just a month ago.
"He was really upbeat and optimistic," Lifshutz told the magazine. "He said he was almost finished writing a screenplay for TV. He was still working at the Cock and he was doing well."
"Mona was a fierce drag warrior with a great lip synch and a wonderfully wicked mouth. She was admired and loved on the drag scene,” Lifshutz said.
