Asian man gets 9 stitches after hate-crime attack in Manhattan: police

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An attacker punched an Asian man in the face near Union Square on Tuesday, leaving him with a cut that required nine stitches, police said.

The 57-year-old man was waiting for a bus near the park in Manhattan around 8 a.m. on Tuesday when another man, identified by police as Saul Babilonia, 58, asked him if he had any cash, the Daily News reported.

When the man walked away from Babilonia, Babilonia "followed him, screamed the slur 'stupid Chino' — which means Chinese in Spanish — and punched [the man] multiple times," the outlet reported.

The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he received the stitches, according to the outlet.

Babilonia faces charges including hate-crime assault, hate-crime harassment and aggravated harassment, the outlet reported.

His attorney information wasn't immediately available Wednesday.
