Boy, 12, and girl, 7, drive family SUV from Queens to NJ; cops catch pair using E-ZPass
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 12-year-old boy drove his family's SUV from Queens to New Jersey on Monday morning, accompanied by his 7-year-old cousin, according to reports.
The South Ozone Park kids left their home in a Range Rover shortly before 9 a.m. on Monday, the Daily News reported.
Police used license plate readers and EZ-Pass technology to track down the two children, who took the Belt Parkway and the Verrazzano Bridge to Staten Island before crossing into New Jersey, according to the outlet.
Authorities managed to take the pair into their custody when they stopped to buy snacks at a rest stop.
The boy "may have been inspired by an internet challenge to take a car and drive it until the gas runs out," the outlet reported, citing a police source.
