Car hits bike-riding gunman after he fatally shoots woman, 52: NYPD
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A gunman who shot and killed a woman in the Bronx on Wednesday was hit by a car as he fled the scene on a bicycle, the NYPD said.
The 52-year-old woman was standing near City Island Avenue and City Island Road on City Island around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday when a 67-year-old man shot her several times, police said.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the NYPD said Her name wasn't immediately released.
The gunman tried to flee the scene on a bicycle after the shooting, but was struck by a car soon after, police said.
He was taken to the same hospital with body trauma, the NYPD said. The department couldn't immediately say what condition he was in.
The woman was carrying out work at a construction site at the intersection when the gunman shot her, the New York Post reported.
Sources told the Daily News the gunman was the woman's ex-boyfriend. The driver who hit him was her current boyfriend, according to the outlet.
"The guy on the bike, came up, started hollering, and just shot her," a witness told the Post. "Then the guy in the car, the black Hyundai, ran him over, jumped out and started kicking the s--- out of him."
The woman who died was "a sweet person," the witness added.
"Everybody smiles and waves at her because she wears a pink hard hat," he said. "I can't believe this."
