NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A former NYPD K-9 officer who claims his supervisor made racist comments and mocked him after his dog died plans to sue the department, according to a report.
Hailyn Oliveras filed a notice of claim last month alleging he was “forced out of [the] NYPD’s elite K-9 unit after reporting… instances of discrimination and workplace harassment,” the New York Post reported.
A driver hit and killed Oliveras’ dog, Nick, in July 2019 while he and the canine were on duty, the outlet reported.
Oliveras claims his supervisor, Sgt. Daniel Hill, ridiculed him after the incident.
“Hill would simulate having a leash on his hand with a make-believe dog,” the notice of claim states, according to the outlet. “He would then make fun of [Oliveras] by throwing the leash under the tires of a parked vehicle to simulate [his] dog being struck by the vehicle.”
Oliveras, who is Dominican, also claims Hill mocked his accent and called him an “illegal immigrant,” the outlet reported.
The NYPD told the outlet the department would “review the lawsuit if and when we are served.”
