WATCH: Christmas Midnight Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral; NYPD issues gridlock alert
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The NYPD has issued a gridlock alert for parts of Manhattan for Midnight Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Saturday.
Streets around the Midtown Manhattan cathedral were expected to be packed as Catholics descend on the church to celebrate Christmas Mass.
The NYPD said the gridlock alert was issued for the following streets:
• Fifth Avenue between 50th Street and 51st Street
• 51st Street between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue
• 50th Street between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue
• Madison Avenue between 50th Street and 51st Street
Closures are possible and would be at the discretion of the NYPD.
While many churches across the United States have canceled in-person celebrations this year amid the surge in COVID-19 cases, Timothy Cardinal Dolan has said he plans to go forward with usual plans at St. Patrick's.
While the NYPD has not issued any gridlock alerts for Sunday, more than 109 million people are expected to hit the road, rails and skies between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2.
It's anticipated that 100 million of those travelers will be on the roads.
