Man, 86, found dead in NYC apartment was next to space heater, had burn marks: report

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police found an 86-year-old man dead inside his Queens apartment on Thursday — and believe he may have died in a fire started by his space heater, according to the NYPD and a report.

Officers conducting a wellness check at an apartment on 194th Street in Flushing around 3:10 p.m. on Thursday found James Murphy unconscious and unresponsive inside, the NYPD said.

Murphy was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The NYPD didn't immediately say how Murphy died, but the 86-year-old "was discovered with burns on his body and the chair where he was sitting — right next to a space heater — was also burned," the New York Post reported.

The Medical Examiner will determine how he died. An investigation is ongoing.
