Man flees JFK Airport without shoes after TSA finds handgun in his carry-on: officials
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Brooklyn man fled John F. Kennedy Airport without his shoes after TSA officers found a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag, officials said Wednesday.
TSA officers screening luggage at a checkpoint inside the airport on Monday spotted the 9mm handgun, which was loaded with seven bullets, in the man's bag via an X-ray machine, TSA said in a release.
When one of the officers asked the man to step aside, he ran out of the terminal, leaving his shoes, duffle bag, vest, cash, New York state learner's permit, passport and boarding pass behind, the agency said.
The man — who had been heading to Atlanta — then hailed a cab, hopped inside and rode off, TSA said. Officials, however, were able to identify him based on the belongings he left at the checkpoint.
"Fleeing the checkpoint does this man no good," TSA's Federal Security Director for the airport, John Bambury, said in a statement. "It was foolish of him to run."
The man faces a $4,100 civil penalty for carrying the loaded handgun into the checkpoint, the release said.
